Dr Saboor is one of the most experienced high volume Cataract surgeons in Scotland.

At the forefront of surgical innovation

Dr Saboor has been operating at the leading edge of ophthalmic surgical care for over 30 years. He provides a high volume cataract surgery service in NHS Forth Valley, and is the Clinical Lead for Macular services as well as the Clinical Laser Expert. He has been at the forefront of many innovations in ophthalmic surgery:

● Dr Saboor has the longest experience in topical anaesthetic cataract surgery (pain-free surgery without anaesthetic injection) in routine clinical practice in Scotland.

● In Scotland, he was amongst the first to implant refractive multifocal IOL implants (Array IOL 2000) and artificial Iris Prosthetic Systems to correct iris damage (Ophtec IPS 2001).

● Additionally, he was the first eye surgeon in Scotland to implant an Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lens to correct age-related presbyopia (Symfony EDOF 2014), and the first to implant a miniature optical telescope in the eye for end stage macular degeneration (IMT 2015).

Dr Saboor has been a fully accredited Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Forth Valley NHS Trust and in private practice since 2000. He graduated from King Edward Medical College in 1987 with academic distinction award and Gold Medal. He completed Basic Ophthalmic Surgical Training in Glasgow and Essex between 1989 and 1992 and was awarded Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Fellowship of Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London in 1992. He completed Higher Ophthalmic Specialist Training in Glasgow and Birmingham from 1993 to1999. He is the Clinical lead for Cataract surgery, Clinical lead for macular services and Clinical Laser Expert for Forth Valley NHS.

Dr Saboor is one of the most experienced high volume cataract and Lens Implant surgeon in the country, with over 30 years of experience in Ophthalmology and having performed thousands of cataract and Intra-ocular Lens Implant Surgeries. He is an experienced user of multifocal, Extended Depth of focus (EDOF) and accommodative implants to correct Presbyopia, toric implants to correct astigmatism and ICL (Implantable Contact Lenses). Dr Saboor is also a medical retina specialist with expertise in macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease and lasers. Dr Saboor has always been at the forefront of innovation, being the first surgeon in Scotland to implant Miniature Implantable Telescope for macular degeneration, Artificial Iris Prosthetic System for damaged iris and EDOF (Extended depth of focus) Intra-ocular lens for presbyopia.

Dr Saboor has been keenly involved in teaching and training of doctors and nurses. He has organised training courses in Phacoemulsification Cataract surgery and lectured both nationally and internationally. Dr Saboor has been the College tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London from 2003 to 2013 and Educational and Clinical Supervisor for trainee doctors since 2000. He sat on the CPD (Continuous Professional Development) committee of Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London and CPD co-ordinator for Scotland West. Dr Saboor is Lead examiner for the FRCS (fellowship examination) of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, an Expert Advisor to Scottish Medicines Consortium and sits on consultant appointment committees as Adviser for Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties in Scotland. In October 2019, he was appointed Honorary Clinical Registrar for Ophthalmology at Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow to oversee its fellowship exam, FRCS Ophthalmology, both in United Kingdom and all the international centres.

Dr Saboor likes travelling and has regularly participated in Charity Eye Camps in the developing world. He enjoys spending his spare time with his wife and children.
